Tuesday night twenty delegates were pledged to the two Democratic presidential candidates in South Dakota. Both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders leave the state with ten delegates each.

However, the Democratic national convention in Philadelphia isn’t until late July.

State Democrats employ a proportional delegate system.

In addition to the 20 pledged delegates, five unpledged, or super delegates remain.  They are former or current elected officials, including former Senate majority leader Tom Dascle.

George McGovern, Favorite Son of South Dakota

Jul 26, 2014

South Dakota is celebrating 125 years of Statehood.  Throughout the celebration, we're sharing stories on the people, places and events that make our state the Land of Infinite Variety.   One of South Dakota’s most recognizable people didn’t let a very bad day on the world stage stop him from doing good in the world.

Dave Kranz and I had a deal.  He would do a taped interview with me about his memories of George McGovern and I would hold the audio until after George McGovern died.

At the beginning of the interview Dave jokes that McGovern would probably outlive us both.

It was always fun for me to watch Dave Kranz work.  I was always in awe of him and his ability to know everyone and everything.  He could walk through a line of people and tell you story after story of everyone he recognized and how they're connected to certain politicians.

George McGovern Enters Hospice

Oct 15, 2012

Former U.S. Sen. George McGovern is in hospice care.

Ann McGovern, the Senator’s daughter, says her father is coming to the end of his life.

Last year in Mitchell McGovern addressed a crowd of college students and professors about his first job in politics in South Dakota and all the work he did to increase the number of Democrats in the state.

“I wore out three cars completely, not brand new ones three second hand ones I covered every county not once but a dozen times,” says McGovern.
