Rainbow Family Gathering Comes To A Climax

While people all across South Dakota were celebrating on the fourth of July things were quiet in the Rainbow Family campground. At its peak 1,700 gathered in the Black Hills. Saturday several hundred remained silent from sunrise until noon for their annual prayer event.

  The Rainbow Family Gathering is as close to officially starting as a group without leaders can be. Officials estimate nearly 1,000 people have set up camps in the National Forest near Deerfield Lake.

The Rainbow Family is planning a gathering in the Black Hills in July and some members have already arrived.  The group is often referred to as hippies.  Thousands of them come together once a year often on a piece of National Forest land.   A public meeting in Hill City gave local community members a chance to question the Rainbow Family about their upcoming event. The meeting became heated when several in attendance walked out.

“I’m going to ask you to move your chairs and to sit in a circle,” says Jerry Cole the Executive Director of the Hill City Chamber of Commerce.

Rapid City Police Warn Against Aggressive Panhandling

A group called The Rainbow Family is planning a large gathering in the Black Hills that could bring thousands of people to the area. The gathering is set for early July but local law enforcement say they are concerned about increased panhandling and soliciting that may come alongside the event.

Brendyn Medina is the community relations specialist for the Rapid City Police Department. He says the department is preparing for what could be thousands of people in the Black Hills for the Rainbow Gathering.

Native American business owners and tribal leaders will gather with representatives from lending institutions and government agencies for the 2015 South Dakota Indian Business Conference in Deadwood this week. Native entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs will learn about the successes and challenges in creating an Indian business.

The biennial South Dakota Indian Business Conference has become a “must attend” for anyone interested in starting, maintaining or assisting a Native-owned business, says Tanya Fiddler.
