Rapid City Fire Department officials say current conditions are prime for wildfire, and residents should be extra careful when discharging fireworks. State Fire Marshal Paul Merriman says all South Dakotans should be cautious. He says even when vegetation is green, it can still ignite.

State Parks Plan For An Eventful Weekend

If you're planning a camping road trip over the 4th of July you are not alone.   Officials are predicting record travel this holiday weekend and reservations at state park campgrounds are already full. Lynn Spomer is with South Dakota Game Fish and Parks. She says holiday weekends usually fill up early. She encourages visitors to still enjoy all of the parks’ activities and events beyond camping.

Fourth of July Travel At All-Time High

This Fourth of July weekend could see record-breaking numbers of travelers. AAA predicts that increased auto and air travel may result in benefits beyond the holidays.

Nearly 43 million Americans are projected to travel this weekend. Marilyn Buskohl of AAA South Dakota expects the state to have a one percent increase over last year in holiday travel. She says this prediction is based on low gas prices, which are 40 cents lower in the state than last year.

Rushmore No Longer Has Fireworks

Mount Rushmore is celebrating Independence Day weekend just like the rest of us, with one major difference.  There isn’t a firework show.

Mount Rushmore is hosting many different programs and activities July 3rd and 4th. Everything from presidential impersonators and flutists, to world champion hoop dancers. However, the celebration has not included a fireworks display for several years. Wanda Goodman is the Department of Tourism’s Deputy Secretary and she says safety concerns were behind the decision.

Along with colorful fireworks, the Fourth of July is also celebrated with music. Audiences in the Black Hills have the opportunity to hear a variety of sounds with concerts by performing units from the United States Air Force Academy Band.

The legal sale of fireworks in South Dakota continues through Sunday. Officials are reminding people to be safe and use common sense as they celebrate the Fourth of July.

Pennington County Fire Administrator Denny Gorton urges residents to follow the instructions on the fireworks packages, plan for the unexpected and always have a bucket of water or garden hose ready. Gorton told Dakota Midday that his office’s main concerns over the next week as people shoot off fireworks is public safety and fire prevention.

A law making texting wile driving illegal in South Dakota takes effect on Tuesday. Motorists are prohibited from using a handheld device to write, send or read text messages except to contact emergency services.

Violators of the new law are subject to a $100 fine. "Texting behind the wheel is a triple whammy--it takes your eyes off the road, your hands off the wheel and your mind off of driving," says AAA South Dakota spokeswoman Marilyn Buskohl.
