Friday night, the lights will go on at high school football fields across South Dakota.  Teams in the state’s seven classes begin play with an eye toward state championships in mid-November.  But this season, and in 2016, the lights won’t go on in a southeast South Dakota town that once was a football powerhouse.

According to the Brain Injury Association of America, an estimated 2.4 million children and adults in the United States sustain a traumatic brain injury each year. The association sets aside every March as Brain Injury Awareness Month.

Thayne Munce is associate director of the Sanford Sports Science Institute. He authored a study on brain injury risk in youth football. The studied monitored 22 local youth football players ages 11 to 13 during a single season of 27 practices and 9 games. Each player wore sensors in his helmet which measured head-impact frequency, magnitude, duration and location. More than 6,000 head impacts were recorded, and found to be similar in magnitude and location to those in high school and college football but less frequent.

SDSU Stadium Bill Travels To The Governor

Mar 11, 2014

South Dakota State University is about to see a new football stadium thanks to a green light from the state legislature. Republican State Representative Dan Dryden says SDSU needs a stadium upgrade.

"The authorization will allow for a replacement of the 11,000 seat Coughlin Alumni Stadium built in 1962, with a new proposed 19,000 seat facility. The current facility is outdated, too small and does not meet the needs of fans, athletes, or successes of the SDSU football program," Dryden says.

The House Appropriations committee passed Senate Bill 15 this Wednesday morning. This bill allows the South Dakota Building Authority and the Board of Regents, to construct a new football stadium at South Dakota State University. Justin Sell is the Athletic Director at SDSU. He says anybody who visits Coughlin Alumni Stadium on game day, can tell upgrades are needed.

Youth Football And ACL Injuries

Feb 21, 2014

Judith Peterson, Physician Sport Medicine Rehabilitation, has been involved in a project to decrease ACL knee ligament tears in adolescent athletes in South Dakota. These severe injuries are a national epidemic and affect many South Dakota athletes and families. Peterson is presenting a lecture on this topic at the national meeting of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation October 5 in Washington DC. She joined Innovation host Cara Hetland to discuss this severe injury suffered on the playing field.

The State Senate approved the South Dakota State University football stadium bill. This allows the Board of Regents and the South Dakota Building Authority to help design and finance the new football stadium on campus.

The South Dakota High School Activities Association is under public scrutiny over information revealed at last weeks meeting and lawmakers want to understand why. Activities Association Executive Director Wayne Carney took questions about open records, the budget, and scheduling state championships.

Republican State Senator Al Novstrup says he's pleased with the meeting with high school Activity Association staff. He says it was important to sit down together and gather information.
