Adam Nero and Thomas Hentges have traveled similar paths during their careers in music.  Both played in hardcore bands before finding was to explore their creativity through Americana and roots music.  Nero, a classically trained guitarist, was a fan of Chet Atkins, Townes Van Zandt and Mississippi John Hurt while his father was also introducing him to John Prine and old bluegrass music.  His band is Expatriate.  Their tight, expressive songs will have you tapping your foot.  Expatriate opened for Burlap Wolf King on April 5, 2014 at Dakota State University in Madison.

The Tinder Box

Two months after releasing "The Attic Sessions: Volume 1," a collection of eight new songs, The Tinder Box played most of the new tunes at the Dahl Arts Center in Rapid City during their Winter Music Series (March 21, 2014).  Its the third recording for brothers Chad Konrad and Dominic Osterloh and cousin Jon Wallner who formed in 2010 during their scholastic days at South Dakota State University.  Gruff vocals aid to the band's distinctive sound.  Elevated banjo picking, drum kicks, well-timed trumpet fills and rich harmonies enhance the overall concept.

The Barley Jacks With Brian Wicklund

The Barley Jacks with Brian Wicklund headlined the 2013 Sioux River Folk Festival at Newton Hills State Park near Canton.  Fronted by internationally known fiddler Brian Wicklund, the Barley Jacks blend an energetic mix of original bluegrass, Celtic and roots music.  The Minnesota band also features Joe Cruz on guitar, Kevin Rowe on the upright bass and Joel Arpin on percussion.  All members are learned in several musical styles.  The Barley Jacks with Brian Wicklund have recorded two albums.  Their most recent recording, "The Lighthouse," was released in 2011.

Mark and Sarah Anderson of the Colorado band, Paper Bird, talk about their rare and beautiful approach to music which has led them to be featured on NPR's All Things Considered.  Paper Bird has also been named in the Denver Post's Top 1o Best Underground Bands three years in a row.  Paper Bird will perform Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Matthews Opera House and Arts Center in Spearfish.
