As a young boy, Fred's mother read him "Last of the Mohican's" which ended up being a major influence on him when it came to nature and Native American culture. Gilbert-Schrag's experience with non-profits includes festival production and event coordination. She previously worked for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., before returning to South Dakota to be close to family.

The Humane Society of the Black Hills Board of Directors has recently appointed Jerry Steinley to the position of executive director. Steinley served as Resource Development Director in his previous role.

Steinley takes over a society that takes in approximately 5000 animals annually from as many as 20 counties.

The South Dakota Board of Regents selects Paul Beran as its next executive director and CEO. Beran has held faculty and administrative positions in higher education in five different states. Before this appointment, he served for more than a decade as chancellor of the University of Arkansas.

SDHSAA Has A New Executive Director

Dan Swartos is the new executive director of the South Dakota High School Activities Association. Swartos is currently the superintendent for the McCook Central School District. He replaces Wayne Carney as SDHSAA Executive Director this summer.

Swartos says the new job is a bit intimidating. He says even though he has big shoes to fill, Carney is going to work with him to make sure the transition runs smoothly.

New Executive Director For Journey Museum

Janna Norby replaces longtime Journey director Raymond Summers who retired on May 1. Norby is a western Montana woman who has curator experience with Montana state history and the National Park Service. Board of Directors President Donna Fisher says Norby's youth and energy will help the museum build new connections with the local audience and visitors to Rapid City. "Norby brings a passion for museums which she believes connects the past and present for people of all ages," Fisher says.
