Lynne Murphy is an American linguist teaching in England. She's uniquely suited to explore the relationship and rivalry between English ... and English. In other words, she studies the prejudices and stereotypes and insecurities that shape our understanding of how English works in two different countries.

Murphy pens the award-winning blog "Separated by a Common Language." Her new book is called The Prodigal Tongue: The Love-Hate Relationship Between American and British English.

University Sioux Falls officials say their school can fill a void left when a community college closed. USF is preparing to launch a program aimed at helping people learn English so they can go to college or become skilled workers. A program that used to help those students ended earlier this year. Now USF leaders say they’re resurrecting the opportunity.


Higher education leaders are working to get students on track for college-level courses without adding to their years in school. Not all students are prepared for college or tech programs after high school. Now educators are offering them opportunities to catch up while taking normal class loads.

Representatives from the Board of Regents and South Dakota’s technical institutes are talking to lawmakers about retaining students – especially when their skills are shy of normal requirements. State colleges and tech schools now have versions of co-remediation.

Student performance on the new state assessment of English language arts and math was better than expected, according to state officials.  Today, Melody Schopp, South Dakota Department of Education Secretary, discussed the release of the 2015 Report Card - a review of South Dakota schools' performance based on multiple indicators.  Released today, the Report Card offers a summary at the school, district and state levels.

New methods to help ready incoming college students for important courses appear to be effective. Some of South Dakota’s public universities are using programs that change the way higher ed handles remediation. 

A new math model at South Dakota State University proved so effective in its pilot that SDSU is implementing it. This method uses a combination of assessments to determine where a student’s skills lie and better aligns his or her abilities with the right level of math.
