Flight Club Takes Off At Roosevelt High School

The halls of Roosevelt High School in Sioux Falls are abuzz with new technology. Nathan Hofflander, adviser of the school's Flight Club and head of The Volaré Project, is using drones to keep students engaged in the classroom.

SDPB's Jackie Hendry visited with members of the club and stopped by their unique fundraising event. 

A Senate committee is no longer considering banning lobbyists from an adjacent hallway to the Senate chambers; but reserve the right to bring it back if there's a problem. Unmanned aircraft don't need to register according to the Senate Transportation Committee. Pierre Mayor Laurie Gill will not run for re-election. Gill also serves as head of state Bureau of Human Resources. Lawmakers are forming a special commission to investigate a fellow member for alleged sexual contact with a legislative intern during previous sessions.

States Regulate Drone Use in Hunting

Drones are gaining in popularity.   They are seeing increased use in commercial applications like real estate.  And, even some use in law enforcement.   But there is one thing many wildlife officials say drones shouldn’t be used for… hunting. Wyoming just passed a restriction on drone use in hunting.  Other states are considering proactive measures to maintain ethical hunting practices.

This week the FAA announced plans to require all drone operators to become licensed. This includes small recreational drones with cameras that are increasingly available and that can be flown with a smart phone.

Toby Brusseau is one few people in South Dakota who is an FAA licensed Commercial Drone Operator.  Brusseau is also author of a book called I am South Dakota.  Now he’s capturing South Dakota in a new way shooting the state’s landscape and scenery with a drone and high end camera.

Kent Osborne and "The Computer Guys" discussed Windows 10 on Friday's show as well as some far out stuff from Black Hat about using printers' IO cables to generate radio signals to steal information through concrete walls.

Drones were also a big topic Friday - drones and California forest fires, multiple drone sightings by crews of landing aircraft and drones being shot out of the sky.

The National Association of Attorneys General has a new president. It’s Marty Jackley. South Dakota’s AG now leads the group of people from all 50 states, Washington, DC and United States territories. Members held the election at this week’s annual conference.
