Tax Professionals At Risk For Phishing

A new email scam pretends to come from tax software providers but is really an attempt at ID Theft. The IRS is targeting the problem to protect consumers from cybercrime.

IRS cyber security experts say they have discovered an email scheme that asks tax professionals to download and install an important software update. The link then loads a program designed to track the tax professional’s key strokes.

Ransomware Payoff And FBI Encryption Case

Kent Osborne and "The Computer Guys" discussed the ransomware attack of Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center that resulted in the hospital paying a 40-bitcoin ransom (about $17,000) to regain control of its network. 

The panel also commented on Apple's refusal to help the FBI acquire encrypted data from the San Bernardino shooter's iPhone - a decision with which Google CEO Sundar Pichai seems to concur.

Other topics included the Twitter GIF button, the Mattel 3D printer and a warning from Samsung to their customers to watch what they say around their smart TVs.

Windows 10 And Drones, Drones, Drones

Kent Osborne and "The Computer Guys" discussed Windows 10 on Friday's show as well as some far out stuff from Black Hat about using printers' IO cables to generate radio signals to steal information through concrete walls.

Drones were also a big topic Friday - drones and California forest fires, multiple drone sightings by crews of landing aircraft and drones being shot out of the sky.

The Sony Hack

In an abbreviated Tech Radio, Kent Osborne and "The Computer Guys" discussed the well-publicized cyber attack on Sony. The Federal Bureau of Investigation says North Korea is behind the attack. In his year-end press conference which followed Tech Radio, President Obama said, "We will respond." He declined to offer specifics.
