Jade Addison earned 13.2-percent of the vote when she ran for the South Dakota House of Representatives in District 29 as a Democrat two years ago. This year, Addison is running for the same position as an Independent. District 29 lies in Pennington, Meade and Butte Counties. Addison lives in Sturgis.

CAFO Zoning Bill Advances

A bill that changes the way county zoning is done for Confined Animal Feeding Operations or CAFOs has cleared a State Senate committee.

Those backing House Bill 1140 say it keeps South Dakota agriculture competitive but stops red tape and frivolous delays for local approval.  

Opponents say the measure takes away local control and helps corporate farms to push large feedlots into areas where they are unwanted.

Cattle producers in South Dakota are raising money to feed the hungry by hosting a Toby Keith concert. The famous country artist is slated to perform in the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls in June. Tickets go on sale on Friday, and proceeds from the concert go to Feeding South Dakota. 

Members of a statewide cattle organization started a Prime Time Gala three years ago. The concert component of the event benefits the hungry. Todd Wilkinson is president of the South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association.

Pennington County Sheriff's Office

Every year, there are nearly 12 million jail admissions in the United States. The MacArthur Foundation recently held the Safety and Justice Challenge to help reduce local jail populations.
Pennington County is among twenty finalists to win the competition. The local criminal justice system will receive a $150,000 grant. They will also receive help from experts to come up with a plan to reduce the number of incarcerations.

Oglala Lakota County Name Change Advances

The effort to change the name of Shannon County to Oglala Lakota County faces one final hurdle in the state legislature.  

The Senate State Affairs Committee gave unanimous support to the resolution allowing the name change.  The measure passed the House earlier this session.

Democratic Representative Kevin Killer represents part of the Pine Ridge Reservation.   Killer backs the change and helped get the issue on the county ballot in November.   Killer says the new name received strong support both at the ballot box and in a petition drive leading up to the election.

Shannon County Name Change One Step Closer

A bill to rename Shannon County as Oglala Lakota County sailed over its first legislative hurdle in an unanimous vote before the Senate State Affairs Committee.

In November Shannon County voters, which is on the Pine Ridge Reservation, approved the name change by a large majority.
