USD Law School welcomes incoming class

The USD Law School has the largest incoming class in the last ten years. Orientation began Monday.

The courtroom in the USD School of Law was packed with 87 new students. The USD law class of 2022 is the largest since 2009.

Law School Dean Neil Fulton told the class that to succeed in Law School, one must possess the traits of excellence, service, and leadership.

 

Nine days after the state’s first mental health court opened in Pennington County, the state’s top judge is calling for one in Minnehaha County.

During his annual State of the Judiciary speech, Chief Justice of the South Dakota Supreme Court, David Gilbertson, says its time to consider a mental health court in the state’s most populous county.

Chief Justice Gilbertson says five hundred and fifteen prisoners screened at the Minnehaha County jail, during a five month period last year, suffered from mental illness.

South Dakota Supreme Court Justice Steven Zinter has died from complications related to surgery.
Zinter’s death was announced Tuesday morning.

South Dakota’s State Supreme Court Chief Justice David Gilbertson is pointing to the success of drug courts in reducing recidivism.

During his annual State of the Judiciary speech, Gilbertson called for similar courts for veterans and mental health.
