We brought live music and conversation with the musicians of the Chamber Music Festival of the Black Hills at SDPB's Black Hill Studio.

We talked about classical mussic connections in the Black Hills, music education in Western South Dakota, and heard music from West Side Story Suite, Vivaldi and more.

First Peoples Fund

  The National Endowment for the Arts approved nearly 900 thousand dollars in grants for five South Dakota organizations. Some local groups received money for the first time to pursue work in education, performance and preservation work.

In the final concert of the Chamber Music Festival of the Black Hills, held last weekend, musicians explored overlapping influences on composition. Festival organizers called this last concert "Bach, Brahms, and Brothels, a provocative title guaranteed to draw interest.

Festival director Michael Hill says musicians, including Brahms, often found work playing in bars and brothels. That more relaxed style had a deep influence on classical composers of the Romantic era and the 20th Century.

Dakota Midday: SD Video Wins Award

The Chamber Music Festival of the Black Hills recently recorded over 200 boys and girls from the Pine Ridge Reservation and the Black Hills.  They're featured in a "virtual choir" video that earned a second place honor at one of the largest Native American film festivals in Europe.  Guest host Jackelyn Severin was joined by Michael Hill, Executive Director of the Chamber Music Festival of the Black Hills.

Orlando Chamber Soloists

The Orlando Chamber Soloists are back for the 7th annual Chamber Music Festival of the Black Hills. The group first came together in 2004 with professional musicians from the Boston Pops, New Jersey Symphony, Curtis Institute, Louisiana Philharmonic and orchestras throughout Florida.
