The Mayor of Sioux Falls is hosting his 3rd annual Big Sioux River Water Summit Thursday. Conservationists, city officials, and agriculture specialists are discussing projects to improve the water quality near the Big Sioux River.

Jesse Neyens is an environmental analyst and water quality specialist with the city of Sioux Falls. He says this year the Mayor decided to host the summit in Brookings hoping to engage more people in the discussion of water quality.

Brookings Mayor Tim Reed and Entrepreneurial Program Director for the Brookings Economic Development Corporation, Beth Knudson join Dakota Midday to  discuss the start-up grant awarded to the community.  Twenty-seven prizes of $50,000 were awarded through the “Start Small” competition.  These prizes were awarded to 25 cities and two Native American tribes in order to help these communities develop a streamlined, centralized business formation platform.  Brookings and the Cheyenne River Reservation both won $50,000 prizes.

Last summer, according to the American Brewers Association, the number breweries in the U.S. topped 3,000 for probably the first time since the 1870s. The majority of them are small, local craft breweries and numbers are expected to increase as the resurgence in American brewing continues to grow. South Dakota has at least fourteen microbreweries and brew pubs.

Bee Care Tour Comes To Brookings

The Bayer CropScience 2nd Annual Bee Care Tour stops in Brookings on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at the McCrory Gardens Education and Visitor Center.  Honey bees and other pollinators play a vital role in the food supply with more than 25% of the nation's agricultural crops dependent upon pollination.  Bayer CropScience bee expert Sarah Meyers talked about this year's tour which engages attendees on the important role pollinators and seed treatment technology plays in creating a sustainable agriculture.

On February 21 for the first time ever, the internationally acclaimed TED event is coming to Brookings as TEDxBrookings. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. TEDxBrookings is focused around the theme "Reinventing Rural." The goal is to bring together artists, business and community leaders, entrepreneurs, students and educators to showcase the diversity and creativity of rural South Dakota.

A South Dakota health system is moving toward fulfilling the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative. Brookings Health System is in Phase 2 of the program from the World Health Organization and UNICEF.

To be baby-friendly according to the international standard, health organizations must complete 10 steps for successful breastfeeding. Those extend through hospital policies and practices, and they include education for staff, physicians and community members.

The city of Brookings is listed by as one of the top ten best small towns to live in the United States. Livability started with a top 500 places to live category and eventually broke off into best small towns.

RaVae Luckhart

The South Dakota Art Museum at South Dakota State University in Brookings is hosting an artist reception for RaVae Luckhart's "Brush, Color, Stroke" exhibit, Friday from 4:30 to 7:00 pm. The exhibit is on display through September 15. Luckhart is a retired Professor of Art from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. She travels extensively, painting her experiences as research for her studio work.

Northern Voyage Film Festival

The festival brings together local, regional and national filmmakers and film lovers. The Northern Voyage Film Festival highlights the opportunities to filmmakers in Brookings and South Dakota. The May 10-11 event at the Brookings Arts Council features screenings of local short films, a local award-winning feature film, and a four-time Academy Award nominated film.
