Actor, Director Thatcher Passes

  Neil Graham Thatcher, known statewide and nationally for acting and directing, passed away Thursday. Together, he and his wife developed a theater program for continuing legal education that focuses on ethics and values that are still used in classrooms today.


Neil Graham Thatcher started acting when he was five. He appeared in and directed over 150 plays. Thatcher met his wife of 48 years working at the Black Hills Playhouse.

Leave the ordinary behind at this year's Black Hills Playhouse Season Warmer and Fundraiser, featuring the Retro All-Stars.

It's a chance for audiences to "warm up" the theater with food and entertainment, music and stories.

The event features Black Hills Playhouse alumni Eric Johnson, Darla Drew, Gordy Pratt, and Dalyce Sellers. Join the audience Saturday, June 2 at 2:00 p.m. and at 7:30 p.m at the Black Hills Playhouse in Custer State Park.

Barefoot Dance Studio Makes Art From Movement

Movement is a form of storytelling for many types of artists. The Barefoot Dance Studio in Rapid City is home to a variety of classes that teach students to use their bodies for self-expression.

Schaefer: “I am in my 10th year of business here and I have been a dance teacher for a long time.”

Tony nominated Broadway lyricist and playwright Bill Russell was born in Deadwood and raised in Spearfish. His Broadway writing debut was with “Side Show” (music by Henry Krieger). This month he is working with the Black Hills Playhouse in Custer State Park as guest artist for the production of “Pageant.” He joins Dakota Midday for a conversation about art, theater, and the journey from the Black Hills to Broadway.

Gordy Pratt, Paul Larson, Jami Lynn, and Kenny Putnam take over the Rapid City studio with live music and a conversation about the Black Hills Playhouse.  The Black Hills All Stars play Friday and Saturday with a total of three shows as a fundraiser for the Playhouse.

A federal law now requires schools to offer programs to help raise awareness, lower risk, and help prevent campus sexual assault. Jason Reuter, operations manager of the Black Hills Playhouse, sits down with Dakota Midday host Lori Walsh to discuss how actors can address thorny social issues. Reuter has partnered with School of Mines & Tech, playwright Matt Stoffel, and other community and theater members to initiate a conversation about violence against women through drama.

Alumni from across the country are reuniting in the Black Hills region to celebrate years of live theatre. The Black Hills Playhouse is in its 70th anniversary season.

At the Black Hills Playhouse in Custer State Park offer four summer productions. They include about 70 people from 22 states. Dan Workman is the artistic director.

The two-man show, A Couple of Blaguards, is based on the real-life adventures of brothers Frank and Malachy McCourt. It takes them from an impoverished childhood in Limerick, Ireland to their immigration to Brooklyn in the 1950s. The play is a comedic remembrance based in the Irish storytelling tradition, but it also has a poignant edge.

Located in Custer State Park at the site of an old Civilian Conservation Corp camp, the Black Hills Playhouse brings artists from all over the nation to create theater productions for residents and people visiting the Black Hills, and educational experiences for students of theater.

The playhouse is affiliated with the University of South Dakota and is one of the oldest summer stock theaters in the nation. Each summer four to six plays are offered covering musicals, drama, and comedies during 72 performances Tuesdays through Sundays.

The Black Hills Playhouse is one of the oldest continuously operating summer stock theaters in the nation. Every summer the playhouse brings artists from all over the nation to create theater productions for residents and people visiting the Black Hills, and educational experiences for students of theatre. The playhouse will present a sneak peak review of the 2014 season on Saturday with the Tatanka Teaser at 2pm and 7:30 pm.
