Technology continues to change how we communicate and how we work. It's also changing how we learn. One South Dakota university is facing the challenge head-on with a new digital initiative and partnership with Apple.

Most of the student’s filing into the Sherman Center at Dakota Wesleyan didn’t know much about their school’s new initiative. They only had a name: Digital DWU.

But curiosity turned to excitement when junior Aaron Ahmadu took the stage and performed a rap about changing times.

Dakota Wesleyan University becomes the first campus in South Dakota to supply each student with an iPad starting this fall. The university announced its digital initiative and partnership with Apple on Tuesday. 

Students gather in the Sherman Center on the Dakota Wesleyan campus and wait for what they’ve been told is an announcement about the future of their education. Most of them only know the name of the initiative: Digital DWU.

Samsung

After delaying shipment of its flagship smartphone Galaxy Note 7, Samsung is set to recall all of the Note 7s that have shipped in its home nation and abroad as problems have been traced to the battery.

Earlier this week, Apple was ordered to pay a record sum of 13 billion Euros plus interest after the EU said Ireland illegally the iPhone maker's tax bill.  At the time, Apple CEO Tim Cook called the accusations "baseless."  Since then, a war of words has developed between Cook and Europe's competition chief.

While Apple continues to resist a court order requiring it to assist the Federal Bureau of Investigation in accessing a terrorist's phone, another major tech company has taken a strange and unexpected step away from encryption.  Amazon has removed enterprise-level device encryption from its Fire Tablet devices.  The move affects millions of users.

Kent Osborne and "The Computer Guys" also discussed the free upgrade to Windows 10 and iTunes Radio's switch to Apple Music among other issues.

Ransomware Payoff And FBI Encryption Case

Kent Osborne and "The Computer Guys" discussed the ransomware attack of Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center that resulted in the hospital paying a 40-bitcoin ransom (about $17,000) to regain control of its network. 

The panel also commented on Apple's refusal to help the FBI acquire encrypted data from the San Bernardino shooter's iPhone - a decision with which Google CEO Sundar Pichai seems to concur.

Other topics included the Twitter GIF button, the Mattel 3D printer and a warning from Samsung to their customers to watch what they say around their smart TVs.

SDPB's Kent Osborne and the Computer Guys (Joel Broveleit, Jeff Litterick and Amos Aesoph) were joined by Joshua Warne, a business analyst with First Bank & Trust in Brookings.  Warne is the Founder and Director of the (605) SQL User Group which is part of the national PASS organization.  SQL was created last July with the mission of strengthening and serving the South Dakota SQL server community by providing a forum for members to exchange ideas and knowledge.

"The Computer Guys" gathered to recap the iWatch announcement and visit about other wearables like Disney's MagicBand handy browser on this episode of Tech Radio.  The also visited about recently passed CISA legislation and Bing's choice of Kentucky to win the NCAA Men's Basketball tournament among other topics.

Apple introduced two new, larger iPhones and a smartwatch today. The iPhone 6 will have a 4.7 inch screen while the iPhone 6 Plus screen will measure 5.5 inches. The Apple Watch is a wearable device that's the company's first major new product since the iPad in 2010. Apple also unveiled a system that'll allow users to make credit card payments with their phones at retail stores. Tech Radio's Kent Osborne, John T. Meyer and Joel Broveleit joined Dakota Midday and discussed the new Apple gadgets.

He, his wife and brother would prefer to "do it themselves" on many other personal projects they find on social media sites like Pinterest.
