Castlewood residents are still picking up the pieces over a month after the destructive May 12 storms.

The National Weather Service in Aberdeen found evidence of five tornadoes in South Dakota and two in Minnesota during damage surveys following the derecho on May 12.

The small northeastern South Dakota town of Castlewood was left devastated after a tornado ripped through it Thursday evening.

After strong storms and at least one tornado raged through eastern South Dakota on Thursday, Governor Noem and other city and state officials held a press conference with updates on cleanup efforts and damages.

Gov. Kristi Noem was in her hometown of Castlewood on Thursday night speaking to townspeople after severe storms wreaked havoc on that community and others across eastern South Dakota.
