The 2024 SDHSAA state track and field championships began from Howard Wood Field on Thursday with seventeen field and twelve track events holding their finals.

Six state meet records were broken on day one of the state track and field event.

Christopher Lee of Colman-Egan broke the ‘B’ boys 100m dash state meet record with a time of 10.80 in prelims. This broke Viborg-Hurley’s Angel Johnson’s ‘B’ boys record in the event of 10.81 set in 2021.

Reagan O’Neill of Bennett County broke the all-time state meet record during the ‘A’ girls prelims on Thursday in the 100m dash. O’Neill’s time of 11.74 breaks the time of 11.85 set by Erin Kinney of Harrisburg set in 2019.

Sioux Falls Christian’s 4X100m relay team broke the ‘A’ girls state meet record with a time of 48.99. The team of Halle Braun, Katie VanderLeest, Ashlee VanDriesen, and Mya VanDonge breaks the previous mark of 49.03, also set by Sioux Falls Christian, last year.

Brandon Valley’s girls 1600 spring medley relay team, which consisted of Brooklyn Goetzinger, Audrina Schmidt, Addison Scholten, and Mia Wentzy, broke the all-time state meet record in the event with a time of 4:02.68. The previous record of 4:06.06 was held by O’Gorman, who broke it last year.

Brynn Nelson broke her own state meet record in girls javelin throw with a distance of 137-04. Her previous record from last year was 136-03.

Beau Karst of Harrisburg, who ten days ago broke the state's all-time record in boys pole vault with a height of 16'3", hit the mark of 16'4" to claim the state meet record and bump the all-time record up another inch.
