Bon Homme County’s unique heritage of chalkstone and fieldstone architecture

Some early settlers looked at the chalkstone bluffs along the river – the same bluffs that caught the eyes of the Lewis and Clark Expedition – and saw the building blocks of new communities. Others saw an opportunity in large fieldstones scattered across the prairie.

Some of these migrants were accustomed to building with stone in their home countries.
