South Dakota science in the classroom & the grasslands

On today's show...

We head to a few South Dakota burrows where ferrets may flourish.

Angela Jarding is a wildlife biologist at Wind Cave National Park, which has a small colony of the endangered black-footed ferrets. We learn about the fierce carnivore of the prairie's underground.

We then talk with a professor and alumna at Black Hills State University who are trying to make DNA lessons more fun. Yun-Seok Choi, Ph.D., and Kylie Light discuss their paper and a new approach that uses pop beads to teach DNA sequencing.

Hunger Free America CEO Joel Berg brings us the latest statistics on food insecurity from the USDA. He makes the argument that hunger is a rural problem as well as an urban one.

Plus, he explores the most impactful solutions according to research.

We take a look at the bookshelf of Jacqueline Palfy. She's a community book club leader in Sioux Falls and shares a few of the best books she read in 2023.
