Dr. Scott Beeler and Dr. Sarah Keenan from South Dakota Mines are two researchers taking an in-depth look at the water chemistry at various locations underground at SURF.

This interview originally aired on "In the Moment" on SDPB Radio.

We head deep beneath the Black Hills at the Sanford Underground Research Facility for a close look at the kind of water where extremophiles thrive.

Extremophiles are microbes that evolved to live in extreme environments.

Scott Beeler, Ph.D., is a research scientist at South Dakota Mines and the principal investigator on this study. Sarah Keenan, Ph.D., is a geochemist and assistant professor of geology and geological engineering at South Dakota Mines. She is the co-principal investigator on this research.

They discuss the water and minerals that support life living in the extreme.
