Astrophysicist Art McDonald

Arthur McDonald

In The Moment … December 9, 2020 Show 957 Hour 1

Arthur McDonald was the 2015 recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physics. He won for the discovery of neutrino oscillations -- which shows neutrinos have mass. His research proved neutrinos deviate and switch between three types. He also proved early calculations by Ray Davis and his partner John McCall ... in experiments in the former Homestake Gold Mine ... were accurate.

Dr. McDonald is speaking remotely Thursday evening as part of the Sanford Underground Research Facility's Deep Talk Lecture series – but first, he spoke with SDPB's Cara Hetland earlier this week via Zoom. Here's their conversation where he begins talking about growing up in a small town: Sydney, Canada, and what influenced him in science.
