The Death of Crazy Horse | Images of the Past

In this rare 1962 film from South Dakota Public Broadcasting's archives, we listen as writer, poet and ethnographer John G. Neihardt reads from his book, "Black Elk Speaks".

The book relates the story and visions of Black Elk, who was a noted Oglala Lakota medicine man. Black Elk spoke only in Lakota and Black Elk's son, Ben Black Elk, who was present during the talks, translated his father's words into English.

This excerpt from the book covers the scene of the death of Crazy Horse, chronicling his final words. Ben Black Elk can been heard as well in this video, accompanying John Neihardt's reading with traditional Lakota chants.
