Mississippi plans to fly a new state flag — a flag without the Confederate battle emblem in the corner. The state House and Senate voted Sunday to retire the current flag, and Mississippi Republican Gov. Tate Reeves is expected to sign the measure.

Democratic state Sen. Derrick Simmons voted for the bill, which calls for a nine-member commission to design a new flag that includes the phrase "In God We Trust."

Former NASCAR driver Bill Lester, one of only seven Black drivers to race in NASCAR's top-tier cup series, wanted the Confederate flag gone when he raced more than a decade ago, but the time wasn't right, he says.

"There was no way that I could affect change during the time that I was racing," Lester says. "This is a different day."

Joel Schumacher was a master of the modern blockbuster. The director made "Batman Forever," "The Phantom Of The Opera," "Flatliners," "The Lost Boys," "St. Elmo's Fire," the movie adaptation of John Grisham's book "The Client" and so many other films. He was an unabashed lover of cinema. He put it this way in a 2015 interview.

JOEL SCHUMACHER: It excites people because the reality police are not hanging around all the time. And you can encourage people's imagination, invention, spirit, humor.

Florida Gov. DeSantis recently announced a dramatic decline in the state's median age for coronavirus patients: from 65 years old in March to 37.

Dr. Cheryl Holder, an associate professor at Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine at Florida International University, says that's likely due to older people heeding warnings about how to stay healthy.
