Payments to farmers feeling the impact of the U.S. international trade war have begun. South Dakota farmers have long said they want access to markets rather than a bailout. But with no USMCA and no trade deal with China in sight, for some farmers, those subsidy dollars could mean the difference between bankruptcy and another year in business.
