The US Attorney’s office in South Dakota is naming a District Election Officer to field any complaints of election fraud this year.

The district officer works with other federal agencies to insure a fair election.

The District Election Officer for South Dakota is Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin Koliner.   He says the appointment for this position is routine and not at all unique to this election.  Koliner says he will spend Election Day at a duty station with an FBI agent ready to take calls.

“Hopefully it’s like the Maytag repair man, that we sit and the phone doesn’t ring but if it does we will be ready to act,” says Koliner.

Koliner says it’s important the public knows officials oversee elections to make sure they are fair.

“We’d never want anyone to think they can’t raise concerns with their local US Attorney’s office.  You know it seems like especially in this election year there is all this concern that things quote unquote ‘rigged’ and we worry that people don’t feel confident even contacting their local US Attorney’s office.

Officials with the US Attorney’s office say every citizen must be able to vote without interference or discrimination.  They say Department of Justice will act promptly and aggressively to protect the integrity of the election process.

The District Election Officer, Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin Koliner can be reached by the public at the following telephone number: 605-357-2354.

In addition, the FBI is making special agents available in each field office throughout the country to receive allegations of election fraud and other election abuses on election day. The local FBI field office can be reached by the public at 605-334-6881.

Complaints about possible violations of the federal voting rights laws can be made directly to the Civil Rights Division’s Voting Section in Washington, DC by phone at 1-800-253-3931 or (202) 307-2767, by fax at (202) 307-3961, by email to voting.section@usdoj.gov  or by clicking here.
