Trooper In Critical Condition After Chase

A Highway Patrol Trooper is in critical condition after being struck by a car in Sioux Falls early Wednesday morning. Trooper Andrew Steen was run over by the suspect's vehicle and is hospitalized.

Terry Woster is Public Information Officer for the Department of Highway Safety.

“A Highway Patrol Trooper attempted to make a vehicle stop in the area of 57th and Western in Sioux Falls. The female driver in the vehicle didn’t stop. A short pursuit followed—and that escalated with the trooper being hit by the suspect’s vehicle," Woster says. "Details of that are still being worked out. One of our troopers was hit, and he is in critical condition in a Sioux Falls hospital at this time."

Captain Kevin Joffer of the Highway Patrol says Steen has been a South Dakota trooper for eight years. He says the 25-year-old female suspect was injured as well.

“There was some shots fired by law enforcement. There was a suspect that was hit. As a result, she was taken to a hospital as well," Joffer says. "I do not have any information on her condition—and I will not be releasing any information on her at this time. She is a suspect at this time; there have been no charges filed. This is under investigation.”

Joffer says the investigation falls on the Division of Criminal Investigation and the Sioux Falls Police, because the Highway Patrol was involved. Attorney General Marty Jackley says his office will also have a hand in the investigation. That is standard procedure when a shooting involving law enforcement takes place. The Attorney General's release says results could take a month to determine.
