In Their Own Words: Tribal Community-Based Charter Schools

SDPB

In The Moment January 12th, 2021 Show 971 Hour 1

The 2020 legislature debated a bill to allow for the creation of charter schools on reservation communities that provide greater flexibility to create more culturally sensitive curriculum. The legislation passed in the Senate but failed in the House. The State Tribal Relations Committee met in late October and one of the issues debated was to reprise legislation that would create tribal community-based charter schools. Today for our segment "In Their Own Words," we bring you audio from those committee proceedings. You'll hear committee Representatives Shawn Bordeaux, Sarah Pierce with the South Dakota Education Equity Coalition, Representative Peri Pourier, Senator Troy Heinert, House Speaker Steven Haugaard and Representative Tony Randolph.

In Their Own Words brings you closer to the debates and conversations behind legislative topics. It’s supported by SDN Communications.
