Teach For America

Teach for America is a program aimed at putting academic achievers and top tier graduating professionals in the classroom in marginalized communities. The organization describes itself as growing the movement of leaders who work to ensure that kids living in poverty get an excellent education. The organization has put teachers from across the United States into classrooms in South Dakota. Teach for America is now working to see more Lakota leaders take up teaching professions. In 2007, Jim Curran moved to the Rosebud reservation in South Dakota to work as a manager of teacher leadership development for Teach For America. As the executive director, he now leads Teach For America-South Dakota including 66 current corps members 52 alumni and 9 staff members impacting over 3,000 Native students every single day in South Dakota.  Curran, executive director of Teach for America, discussed the program.
