Red Cross Aid With Aftermath Of SF Tornado

Red Cross

There is a Red Cross emergency shelter now open at the FairGrounds in Sioux Falls for people who suffered damage from Tuesday’s tornado. Gretchen Hjelmstad is Regional Communications Officer for the Red Cross. She says they’re working with the city to determine the amount of residential damage.

“They’ve got cots and blankets and snacks and beverages. There’s power to that building so that’s great if anybody needs to charge their phone and that sort of thing. But really if anybody needs a safe place to stay, go ahead and go out to the Sioux Empire Fairgrounds. We’re in the Armoury Building at 100 North Lion Blvd. in Sioux Falls. And we’ll be there as long as we’re needed to support the community and help in anyway that we can,”

Hjelmstad says the state’s 211 hotline is helping coordinate volunteer efforts for debris clean up. The National Weather Service says there is more severe weather in store for the region. Storms are predicted for tonight into Thursday morning.
