Noem Calls For 'Hold' On Presumptive Probation Repeal Discussion

Governor Kristi Noem is asking lawmakers to put a hold on repealing presumptive probation.

The Senate Judiciary committee is voting on the bill Thursday morning.

Repealing presumptive probation was a key issue for Attorney General Jason Ravnborg during his campaign.

Noem says she understands why…

“This is a concern that we have across the state. We want to make sure we’re addressing criminal activity appropriately,” Noem says. “My concern is on the fiscal side. If we repeal presumption as a whole we will see a lot more people going to prison, and jail time, and that will be a cost to counties and the state that we have to consider as this debate goes forward.”

Noem says she wants to bring stakeholders together to talk about alternatives to repealing presumptive probation.

Critics say the policy shifted the cost burden from the state to the counties and local communities.
