Noem and Jackely Visit Rapid City, Provide Glimpse Into Upcoming Primary

It’s the first week of the new year, and visions of the campaign for South Dakota governor are taking shape.

Both primary candidates for the Republican nomination for governor appeared in Rapid City on Wednesday.

Both events give a glimpse into what’s ahead on the campaign trail…

Last year, 2018 candidate for South Dakota governor and current Attorney General Marty Jackley, called for a clean campaign pledge for his opponent, congresswoman Kristi Noem.

She declined.

Talking to customers and business leaders at Black Hills Bagels along Mt. Rushmore Road in Rapid City, Noem says she’s still got a lot of work to do in Washington D.C., still. She says the governor’s race will come down to experience.

“My business background, running a business being a farmer/rancher, starting them. Then, serving in the state legislature and working on state policy and representing a district. Now, being in DC and seeing how that federal money flows to the state. That’s just a background of experience that Marty doesn’t have," Noem says. "I think that folks, as they listen and talk to both of us, recognize there are issues that we agree on because we’re both republicans and we’re running in a primary. But, who can bring the most experience to the table to really take South Dakota to that next level of success?”

Later that afternoon across downtown, Attorney General Marty Jackley unveiled his legislative package for the upcoming session at the Pennington County Public Safety Building. He was surrounded by the chief of police, county sheriff and states attorney.

Afterwords, Jackley says right now he’s focused on being South Dakota’s Attorney General.

“What I’m doing today is rolling out the legislative package of the attorney general, and really all of law enforcement, in trying to bring public safety and public health. I’m going to be a busy attorney general this session," Jackley says. "I plan on trying the Berget death penalty case at the end of January. I plan on trying the Gear Up corruption case in March and I’m hoping the United States Supreme Court gives us an opportunity on the internet sales tax, to make the pitch of why main street South Dakota is so important.”

The 2018 primary election is June 5th.
