In The Moment: The Forest, The Treaty, And The Precedent For Returning Seized Land

SDPB

The drought in South Dakota continues. The latest drought monitor map reveals any relief that may occur with some precipitation that areas may have received. Laura Edwards is the SDSU Extension State Climatologist, she further explains the current situation.

The interim Joint Committee on Appropriations met Wednesday. SDPB's Lee Strubinger is with us to provide an update on history and civics curriculum standards.

TheSDPB August Spotlight illuminates the Black Hills forest. Today we explore a few things we know about the forest before it was documented by representatives of the U.S. federal government. Craig Howe is founder and director of the Center for American Indian Research and Native Studies (CAIRNS). He holds a Ph.D. in architecture and anthropology. We talk with him about the forest, treaties, and the precedent for returning land that was seized in violation of treaties and federal law.

Wyatt Dennis had his heart set on a LEGO Space Station. He started a lemonade stand that helped him raise more than $700. This summer his lemonade stand received national attention during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally as he raked in more than $15,000, much of which will go to charity.

We meet South Dakotan Silab Naeemi. He became an American citizen at a ceremony at Mount Rushmore in July, where he talked with SDPB's Arielle Zionts. He worked with the U.S. Army for four years as an interpreter and eventually came to the United States. As the U.S. completes a full military withdrawal from Afghanistan and the Taliban regime returns, Naeemi fears for the lives of his mother, father, sisters and brothers. He talks to us about his decision to befriend the United States and the people he left behind.

Micheal Gorsett is head coach of the Sioux Falls Little League team. The team plays Friday in the Little League World Series. SDPB's Chris Laughery talks with the coach about the athletes, their aspirations, and how seriously they take this opportunity.

Chris is a producer for In the Moment.
