Friday morning in Lee County, Florida 57-year-old Kim Aune was arrested. He faces first degree murder in the Minnehaha County death of 21-year-old Kimberly Eidness more than 25 years ago. The two lived together before the shooting that killed Eidness.
Captain Paul Niedringhaus with the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office says law enforcement revisited the decades-old investigation several times . "It’s never really been closed. It’s not a case that just was put on the shelf. This is a case that has always been there, but sometimes when you get a new set, some new eyes on a case, you see some things that maybe you didn’t see the first time," Niedringhuas says. "That’s part of cold cases, to go through these cases. There’s a lot of information; a lot of interviews that were conducted, and it’s repeating some of the same steps that were done to see if something else comes to light to jog somebody else’s memory. That’s a big part of it. It’s been years in the making and again it kind of comes back to being persistent."
Authorities say the murder suspect lived in Florida for some time. Minnehaha County State’s Attorney Aaron McGowan says the next step is to extradite Kim Aune from Florida to South Dakota for arraignment.
