Legion Lake Fire Spreading Quickly By Wind

A forest fire in Custer State Park is estimated at 2,500 acres, and observers say it’s likely to grow.

About 200 fire fighters are on the scene, with more on the way.

Five residences are evacuated.

Scott Jacobson is the public information officer for the Legion Lake Fire. He says the fire is fed by windy conditions.

“It’s wind driven. They’ve got zero containment on it right now,” Jacobson says. “With the weather forecast the way it is the next several days, this is going to go into the rest of the week, we’re guessing.”

Jacobson says multiple fire engines are being used to protect any buildings in the area.

Officials say the cause of the fire is under investigation. They say it’s human caused.

The fire started this morning near the Legion Lake Lodge. Custer State Park is closed to the public.
