"Don't let the geography fool you: the Midwest can be soulful too." That's what Emilia Fredlick of Paste Magazine said in reference to Josh Hoyer and the Shadowboxers - a six piece, nine member project straight from the legendary Zoo Bar in Lincoln, Nebraska. Fredlick went on to praise Hoyer's ear for how to get all of the group's instruments to flow together with his powerful voice.
Hoyer has been very influential in the area's soul, funk and blues youth movement, not only as an artist but having spent much time booking and promoting at Lincoln's Zoo Bar. A steady diet of Stax, Motown, New Orleans and San Francisco helps Josh Hoyer and the Shadowboxers weave the classic vibes of soul and R&B into a fresh sound.
Their self-titled debut CD earned Omaha Entertainment 2014 Album of the Year honors. Their second CD, "Living By the Minute," was released in January and has broken into the Americana Music Association's Top 100 radio chart.
