Dusty Johnson will run for South Dakota’s lone congressional seat in 2018.

Johnson served as Governor Dennis Daugaard’s chief of staff and as a member of the Public Utilities Commission. Currently he lives in Mitchell.

Johnson says his political experience in South Dakota will make him an effective leader in Washington D.C.

“You gotta remember who the bosses are. Those are the voters of South Dakota,” Johnson says. “And when I was on the public utilities commission I think I did a good job everyday of remembering, you know, we’re working for them. I think you need to be willing to roll up your sleeves, I mean nothing easy happens in Washington D.C. And when I was Chief of Staff to Governor Daugaard I think I showed that I did know how to work hard—lots of late nights in that line of work. You need to be willing to dive in to all the complex nuances that the D.C. political environment has.”

Johnson’s bid for the U.S. House of Representatives comes two days after Congresswoman Kristi Noem says she’s running for governor in 2018.

Johnson says it’s too early for politics, but he wants to let South Dakotan’s know he’s interested in the job.
