The House Transportation Committee wants to ease the process for military personnel to acquire service plates for their vehicles. Republican Representative Jim Stalzer backs the proposed changes.
"The one amendment that I talked to them in advance about was they were going to take the disabled plate away from some veterans and it would be particularly like a veteran who had Agent Orange as a disability, which showed up years later. Those people weren’t going to be eligible for those disabled plates," Stalzer says.
Stalzer says the legislation also opens the door for all National Guard members living in South Dakota to get special plates. He says if a Guard member served in Minnesota but now lives in South Dakota, it’s difficult for them to acquire a plate for their vehicle. This passed committee 12-1 and it goes next to the House floor.
