Board of Regents Names Next Executive Director

South Dakota Board of Regents

The South Dakota Board of Regents selects Paul Beran as its next executive director and CEO. Beran has held faculty and administrative positions in higher education in five different states. Before this appointment, he served for more than a decade as chancellor of the University of Arkansas.

BOR President Kevin Schieffer highlights Beran’s history of service in both universities and community colleges as some determining factors in his selection, along with his work on the Arkansas Career Education and Workforce Development board.

Beran says he looks forward to creating pathways that maximize opportunities for traditional and non-traditional students in South Dakota.

“This is a state—because it’s small, we can really make a difference in people’s lives in higher education," he says.

Beran also says he looks forward to collaborating with a number of groups, including the Board of Technical Education. He holds a Ph.D. in higher education curriculum and instruction, a master’s in English and a bachelor’s in English and political science. His appointment with the Board of Regents is effective beginning September 4th.
