Gov. Noem signs bill to define antisemitism, surrounded by lawmakers and Jewish leaders.

Gov. Kristi Noem signs a bill into law that supporters say combats antisemitism.

The bill defines antisemitism and makes it easier to legally prove antisemitic discriminatory conduct.

"I am very proud to sign this historic bill to keep our Jewish people secure. I hope more states will follow our leadership," said Noem.

Several local and national Jewish leaders supported the bill.

Mark Goldfeder is the Director of the National Jewish Advocacy Center. He estimates antisemitism has increased by about 400% in the country since the October 7 attack on Israel.

"Part of the problem is you cannot fight something you cannot define," said Goldfeder. "By adopting this bill and the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism, South Dakota has sent a clear message that there is no place for hate in this state."
