Sturgis residents will vote on the future of their city government structure next month.
A group of petitioners has long sought to remove the Sturgis city manager position, arguing it has taken authority from elected officials.
The city government resisted the effort, but the state Supreme Court ruled in favor of petitioners.
On Friday, a circuit court judge ordered the issue to be placed on the ballot in the municipal election April 8, according to a Black Hills Pioneer report.
Meantime, the Sturgis city council selected one of its own to be interim mayor.
Council member Angela Wilkerson will replace former mayor Mark Carstensen following a city council vote Monday. Carstensen resigned last month after the Supreme Court’s ruling.
Wilkerson will serve the remainder of Carstensen’s term, which expires in 2025.
