A campaign sign supporting Gov. Kristi Noem during the 2022 election. A proposed bill would extend the time these type of signs could be displayed in certain areas.

A proposal to adjust the period of time campaign signage can be displayed advanced from the House State Affairs Committee.

HB 1069, brought by Rep. Mike Weisgram, would allow for political signs to be displayed adjacent to a right-of-way before the beginning of early and absentee voting.

Further, it would allow four additional days after election to collect those signs. Currently, signs are expected to be removed within 24 hours.

David Reiss, executive director of the state Municipal League, spoke in opposition to the bill. Advocating for local control, he said state law trusts local governments with these decisions and that no blanket bill would work for every community across the state.

The bill passed unanimously Friday, and will next be heard on the House floor.
