The upcoming 2024 annual legislative session is already taking shape.
On Tuesday, legislative leaders gathered to green light introducing over a dozen bills that will come up in January.
SDPB's Lee Strubinger joined In The Moment's Lori Walsh to talk about these bills.
At the end of every legislative session, lawmakers submit ideas for what they think should be explored further during the summer.
The constitution prohibits the full legislature from meeting for more than 40 days. During that time, they craft a state budget, and deal with hundreds of bills, all of which are required to get a committee hearing.
That doesn’t leave a lot of time for lawmakers to address big, pressing issues. So, they form a handful of interim committees that meet throughout the year. They take in a larger picture of some of these big issues and craft bills to address them.
This year, legislative committees looked at two big issues that have dogged the state for years: nursing home funding and capacity and county government funding.
