Some 1.3 million Palestinians live in the Gaza Strip, which is 140 square miles in size. Until a September pullout, it was also home to thousands of Israeli settlers and security forces.

This interview originally aired on In the Moment on SDPB Radio.

Last week, a surprise attack by Hamas, a Palestinian militant group, killed more than a thousand Israelis. After the attack, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced his country is at war.

Tim Schorn, Ph.D., joins In the Moment with an overview and analysis of the situation in the Middle East.

Schorn is an associate professor of political science and the coordinator of the international studies program at the University of South Dakota.
