Runoff elections to return to Rapid City

Barring future council actions and at the urging of current Rapid City mayor Jason Salamun, runoff votes will return to Rapid City elections.

That means future mayoral and council candidates must receive over 50 percent of the vote to be declared the winner of their race. If no candidate exceeds the 50 percent threshold in a multi-candidate race, a runoff election would ensue.

Salamun, who won with less than a third of the vote in a five-way race, said reestablishing runoff votes was a top priority entering office.

The runoff vote policy will be in effect for all mayoral and council races beginning with the next election.
