It could take months before Noem hires new chief of staff

Office of Governor Kristi Noem

Gov. Kristi Noem said it could be months before she names a new chief of staff.

Last month, the Republican governor said the search was "going great" and her office was talking to several candidates to take up the position.

Speaking to reporters Wednesday, Noem said she’s in no hurry.

“We’re not in a rush,” Noem said. “We got a great team and I think we are functioning very, very well. So, you may have to wait a while.”

The questions come after Noem’s fifth chief of staff departed last month.

The chief of staff is an important fixture in a governor’s office. They helps set policy, guide the executive branch and work with the legislature.

For now, Noem says she’s taking on that role.
