South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem has signed an order establishing the America 250th South Dakota Commission which aims to prepare for the upcoming 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 2026.
The commission will plan and promote activities within the state to observe the anniversary, according to a press release from Noem's office.
“Our United States of America is the greatest nation to ever exist in the history of the world. In less than three years, we’re turning 250," Noem said. "This momentous occasion deserves a year-long celebration worthy of our great country. I am looking forward to working with the America 250th South Dakota Commission to commemorate our history. Together, we will cherish our founding principles and celebrate our freedoms.”
Noem will appoint members, including the state librarian, representatives from the Board of Regents and representatives of the state legislature, to the commission.
