Noem requests permit for 2024 Mount Rushmore firework show

The South Dakota Department of Tourism has submitted a special permit request for a firework show at the Mount Rushmore Memorial in 2024.

The request is on behalf of Gov. Kristi Noem, according to a press release from her office.

“We will keep fighting to host fireworks at Mount Rushmore and celebrate our freedoms,” said Noem.

Fireworks were last held at the memorial in 2020. Noem hosted former President Trump for that year's Fourth of July celebration. However, in the three years since, the National Parks Service denied permits for the celebration.

The agency cited environmental concerns and opposition from tribes that consider the Black Hills as reasons for rejecting permits.
