The Rapid City mayoral candidate who came in second place is filing a request for a ballot recount.

Alderman Laura Armstrong lost to fellow Alderman Jason Salamun by 269 votes.

That falls within the two percent of the final vote total, which opens eligibility for recount requests.

Armstrong said several people, including family, friends and campaign advisors, encouraged her to call for a recount.

“I just wanted to take a couple of days to process it all,” Armstrong said. “Doesn’t hurt. I’m not trying to stir up any trouble or whatnot. It’s just good to be sure.”

The recount board will consist of one person selected by Armstrong, another by Salamun and a third by the city finance director.

Armstrong filed the notice on Thursday. State law requires the recount take place within ten days of the election. The recount will occur at the Pennington County Auditor’s office.
