The head of the Black Hills National Forest is leaving.

Jeff Tomac has accepted a position in Washington DC as a staff assistant for Rangelands Management and Vegetation Ecology.

Tomac has worked for the forest service for 30 years.

Tomac took the top position at the Black Hills National Forest at the end of 2020. He replaced former supervisor Mark Van Every, who retired in 2019.

The Forest Service officials say they will advertise the supervisor’s position in a few weeks.

Tomac’s two-and-a-half-year tenure included kickstarting a revision to the Black Hills land management plan. Tomac also held the job position during disagreements with the timber industry about reports calling for reductions in timber sales.

Bryan Karchut is serving as acting Forest Supervisor during the transition.
