Gov. Kristi Noem has signed a pair of bills into law providing funding for two new major prison projects.

HB 1016 provides $60 million for construction of a new women’s prison in Rapid City. HB 1017 funds $52 million land for a new men’s prison near Sioux Falls, and sets aside more than $270 million for future construction of the project.

“Funding new prisons is a public safety issue,” Noem said in a press release. “Last year, we made the point to legislators that this was necessary. I’m glad that just a year later, they have come to agree and appropriately prioritized the security of South Dakotans.”

The governor also announced the signing of 10 other criminal justice bills into law, including several measures reforming juvenile justice and parole laws.
